Meditation: A Personal Journey

As an avid runner with a love for the outdoors, I faced a significant turning point in March 2013 when my world came to a halt. Diagnosed with chronic fatigue, I found myself unable to leave the house for six months. This marked the beginning of my true battle with my body.

In my slow attempt to return to work and resume my life, I realised something needed to change. Although I had dabbled in meditation before, it often felt like a chore. Encouraged by my mother and sometimes my GP, I was first properly introduced to meditation through Andy Puddicombe's book, "Get Some Headspace," and the accompanying Headspace app. I tried to quiet my mind, but before long, I gave up.

By 2020, after finding myself in a relatively good place and enjoying outdoor activities again, I developed anorexia. It felt like the beginning of the end for me. At the start of 2022, frequent relapses of chronic fatigue, exacerbated by anorexia and my harsh treatment of my body and mind, made me realise it was time to delve deeper into meditation. While I felt unproductive, I found solace in the achievement of completing a meditation session.

This marked the true beginning of my meditation journey. It has since provided peace during times of overwhelming pain and sadness, as well as joy and laughter. Meditation has become a joyful part of my life, offering much-needed relief and comfort amidst my challenges. It is now my peaceful retreat, providing moments of rest and rejuvenation.

Meditation has helped me develop a greater sense of self-awareness and self-acceptance. Through mindfulness techniques, I have learned to tune into my body and emotions. This awareness has helped me better manage my fatigue and prioritise self-care. We are all works in progress.

In a world that often values productivity over rest, meditation reminds me to be gentle with myself and listen to my body’s cues. By practicing self-compassion, I have been able to let go of feelings of guilt or inadequacy and embrace my journey toward healing and well-being.

Physically, meditation has positively impacted my well-being. Research shows that regular meditation can reduce stress levels and improve sleep quality, both of which are crucial for managing chronic fatigue and life in general. Personally, I have noticed a decrease in my stress levels and an improvement in my overall energy levels since incorporating meditation into my daily routine.

Inspired by Robert Heinlein's quote, “When one teaches, two learn,” I am eager to share my meditation journey with others. Whether through leading guided meditation sessions, sharing resources, or simply offering a listening ear, I am committed to supporting others on their path to greater peace and vitality.

To further my commitment, I decided to train with the British School of Meditation. Their comprehensive training program is renowned for its depth and quality, equipping me with the tools and knowledge needed to guide others effectively. This training has deepened my understanding of meditation practices and has enhanced my ability to support others on their unique journeys.

In conclusion, meditation has been a lifeline for me in managing chronic fatigue, offering a sanctuary of rest. Its calming presence and its ability to foster self-awareness and self-acceptance have enriched my life in countless ways. As I continue on my journey, I am grateful for the refuge meditation provides and the opportunity to help others cultivate inner peace and well-being.
